Most barrier creams rely on petro-derivatives. Midnight Mantle delivers ceramides alongside the cholesterol and fatty acids they need to actually function, then layers in the botanicals that calm skin while it rebuilds. No fillers. Every ingredient is chosen to calm your skin for your best overnight recovery.

The Details
Barrier repair, done properly.
Your skin barrier is built from three things: ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids. Most products add ceramides, put them on the label, and call it a day. Without cholesterol and fatty acids in the formula, those ceramides have very little to work with.
Midnight Mantle contains all three. Ceramide NP and Ceramide AP, vegan cholesterol, and a fatty acid profile built from pumpkin, black cumin, kokum, and squalane. This is the combination your skin uses to rebuild itself, delivered in the ratio it recognizes.
Black cumin, used the way it should be
Cold-pressed black cumin oil carries very little thymoquinone, the compound behind most of what the research credits it with. The CO2 extract concentrates it. So we used both.
The oil delivers a complete fatty acid profile, rich in the linoleic acid a depleted barrier tends to be short on. The extract adds the potency the oil alone can't. Most brands pick one and lose something either way. We don't!
Formulated for overnight recovery
Skin shifts into repair mode while you sleep. Cell turnover increases, blood flow rises, and your barrier does the bulk of its rebuilding. Midnight Mantle was designed for that window, applied as the final step so nothing you layered underneath goes to waste.
Clinical actives, botanical support
Ceramides and bakuchiol handle the structural work. Black cumin seed oil and CO2 extract bring thymoquinone, one of the most studied botanical compounds for calming inflammation. German chamomile CO2 and bisabolol quiet redness and reactivity. Pumpkin seed oil delivers zinc and a fatty acid profile that stays acne-friendly.
Kokum butter, the one nobody talks about
Shea gets all the attention. Kokum butter is the better choice here. It carries one of the lowest comedogenic ratings of any butter, melts on contact rather than sitting on the surface, and delivers structure without heaviness. It is why this balm feels rich going on and disappears into skin instead of sitting on top of it.

The Secret To Your Best Skin Ever is Barrier Repair
You cannot "treat" your way out of a damaged barrier. Skin that is constantly under attack from harsh actives stays inflamed, dehydrated, and reactive no matter what you layer on top.
Rebuild the barrier and everything else starts working.
- Redness subsides
- Acne improves
- Fine lines soften
- The rest of your skincare works better
FAQ
What is a skin barrier and how do I know if mine is damaged?
Your skin barrier is the outermost layer that holds moisture in and keeps irritants out. When it is compromised, skin feels tight, stings when you apply products, flakes, looks dull, or reacts to things it used to tolerate. Over-exfoliation, harsh actives, weather, and stripping cleansers are the usual causes.
Is your cholesterol vegan?
Yes. Cholesterol in skincare is traditionally animal-derived, most often from sheep's wool grease and processed with petrochemicals.
We use a plant-derived cholesterol instead. It performs identically and keeps the formula fully vegan, which matters because cholesterol is not optional in a barrier formula. It is one of the three lipids your barrier is built from, and ceramides won't work as well without it.
Why do ceramides need cholesterol and fatty acids?
Your skin barrier is made of roughly equal parts ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids. They work as a system. Adding ceramides alone into a formula without the other two is like delivering bricks without mortar. Research on barrier repair consistently points to the combination rather than any single lipid. This is why Midnight Mantle includes all three.
What is black cumin seed oil and why is it in this formula?
Black cumin seed oil, from Nigella sativa, has been used topically for centuries and is one of the most researched botanical oils in dermatology. In skincare it is valued for calming inflammation, supporting compromised skin, and delivering a fatty acid profile rich in linoleic acid, which is exactly what a damaged barrier is usually depleted of.
We use it at a high percentage alongside the CO2 extract, which concentrates the active compounds well beyond what the pressed oil delivers alone. That combination is why it does real work in this formula rather than sitting on the label as a nice-sounding ingredient.
What is thymoquinone?
Thymoquinone is the primary active compound in black cumin seed. It is the reason the oil has been studied as extensively as it has.
In the research, thymoquinone shows antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, which translates in skincare to calmer, less reactive skin. For a barrier repair formula this matters, because inflammation is both a cause and a consequence of barrier damage. Interrupting that cycle is part of how skin recovers.
The CO2 extract in Midnight Mantle delivers a more concentrated dose of thymoquinone than the pressed oil on its own, which is why we included both.
Is this a moisturizer or a face oil?
Neither, exactly. Midnight Mantle is an anhydrous balm, meaning it contains no water. It goes on after your moisturizer and after any face oils as the final sealing and repair step. Your moisturizer brings water to the skin. This locks it in and rebuilds the barrier holding it there.
Butters and balms are especially effective at reducing transepidermal water loss. It will make all of your previously applied skincare work harder too!
Why is there no wax in this?
We tried it both ways.
Wax creates a heavy occlusive film that slows absorption and can congest acne-prone skin. We chose kokum butter and a skin-compatible lipid base instead, which gives you the richness without the pore-clogging risk. The trade-off is a softer texture in heat, which the refrigerator solves in minutes if it happens to arrive melted (usually only during the summer months)!
Will this break me out?
Every oil and butter in this formula was chosen for a low comedogenic profile. Kokum butter is one of the least pore-clogging butters in existence. Pumpkin seed oil was specifically selected for being acne-friendly and zinc-rich. Squalane and CCT are both non-comedogenic. That said, everyone's skin is different, so patch test if you are highly reactive.
If you have fungal acne, you usually have to avoid most botanicals no matter how "non-comedogenic". However, most other acnes do well with this product.
Can I use this with Youth Nectar or Electric-C Daisy?
Yes, and they work well together. Apply your face oil first, then Midnight Mantle last to seal everything in.
Is this safe for sensitive skin?
It was formulated for it. There is no synthetic fragrance, no essential oils, and no common sensitizers. German chamomile CO2 and bisabolol were both included specifically for their calming and anti-inflammatory properties.
If you have a known botanical allergy, review the ingredient list first.
Can I use it in the morning?
You can, but it is formulated for overnight use. Your skin does most of its barrier rebuilding while you sleep, and the balm texture is richer than most people want under makeup or SPF.
If you do choose to use it during the day, apply a thinner layer. The product is sun safe so no worries there.
