Dining

Generally, I advocate for stainless steel. Glass is also non-toxic, but not usually practical for babies and young kids.

Sometimes we are asked about silicone items. We generally avoid silicone because some silicones are made with fillers which can leach (sometimes unknown) substances, especially when heated. Unfortunately, many silicone products on the market often contain fillers. (source) It's important to note that leaching generally occurs with exposure to high heat, so the risk is much lower when not heated. We also find that food oils are difficult to remove and they sometimes stain the silicone.

However, you can find safe silicone and it does have its conveniences such as being lightweight and unbreakable for your little ones, and also being a much better choice to plastic (I'll take a silicone lid over a plastic lid any day!). If you do purchase silicone, avoid using it with high heat foods as leaching has been reported. Look for trusted brands like Otter Love which uses 100% Platinum Pure LFGB Silicone, and EZPZ which uses CPSC-certified and 3rd party tested food-safe silicone. U Konserve uses platinum-grade silicone. Avoid no-name brands on Amazon.

We love these options because they use rubber (rather than plastic) nipples.

Breastfeeding

  • Motherlove Nipple Cream (100% USDA Certified Organic; best ingredients we've found: Extra virgin olive oil, beeswax, shea butter, marshmallow root, calendula flower)
  • Silverette Nipple Cup Covers (soothe breasts in between breastfeeding if you want to avoid creams; also protects against chafing from clothing)

Formula

Hard to find infant formulas without seed oils, although there are organic options. This is because the FDA requires that they have a certain fatty acid profile which the vegetable oils provide in order to be considered infant formula. (source) This fatty acid profile is essential for their developing body and brain. Choosing organic ensures the oils used did not undergo harsh processing such as bleaching, deodorizing or hexane-extraction.

We used Holle with our kids because we felt more comfortable with the German standards at the time. This brand is from Germany and gets imported so there is a risk it might be stopped by customs. It happened to us one time.

When shopping for a baby formula, here are a few tips to consider:

  • Buy organic (this at least ensures the oils are not made using toxic solvents, and less likely to contain glyphosate residue, it will also mean it is non-GMO)
  • Careful with palm oil, some palm oils have environmental concerns, and for some infants, it can cause constipation. (source)

A2 Serenity is a decent toddler formula that some families have chosen to give to their infant. (remember: it cannot be marketed as infant formula, since it does not contain the required vegetable oils and fatty acid profile).

  • A2 Serenity Toddler Formula (note: does contain palm oil, but sustainably sourced)
  • Baby's Only (USDA organic, Non-GMO, Clean Purity Label; oils: organic sunflower, organic soybean, organic coconut)
  • By Heart (cow's milk; USDA Organic, Non-GMO, Clean Purity Label; oils: organic sunflower, organic rapeseed/canola, organic coconut)
  • Bobbie (cow's milk; USDA organic, Clean Purity Label; oils: organic safflower/sunflower, organic canola, organic coconut)
  • Holle (goat's milk; oils: organic sunflower, organic canola) IMPORTED

Diapering & Wipes

Disposable Diapers

Cloth diapering is the only true clean option, however, we know over 90% of families choose disposable diapers. And while we cannot find diapers that don't contain polyacrylates and other pollutants, we CAN find diapers that choose better materials, particularly the ones that touch baby's skin. Did you know a baby's skin is more permeable than an adult's? (source)

Read our Ultimate Diaper Comparison to find the disposable diaper that might work best for your family.

PRO Tip: you might not know which diapers perform the best for you. Add several different brands to your registry so you can try as many as possible before you need to order some yourself.

Cloth Diapers

If you are new to cloth diapering, this is a great resource to learn more about how to choose what works for you: Green Mountain Diapers.

Some of our favorites:

Wipes

Most wipes are not made of the best materials, nor are they biodegradable. Be careful with greenwashed claims over bamboo. We highly suggest using the Taylor’s Naturals Wipes Juice Concentrate and pairing it with reusable or disposable cloths. Not only will you save money, but it will be better for your baby and the environment.

Balms and Diaper Creams

Medicines, Supplements, First Aid

Bath & Body

Baby Shampoo and Wash

This list contains both scented with EO and EO-free products. Review the ingredients for your preference.

Shower and Bath Water Filters - If your child is sensitive to your city's tap water, consider adding a bath or shower filter.

Baby Lotion

Oral Care

Clothing

Stick to natural fibers. You don't need to buy everything organic if you are on a budget. However, we would highly suggest buying organic for their sleepwear and loungewear (where they will spend most of their time). Prioritize organic clothing when they are younger as their skin is more permeable during this time (source).
