Medicines & Supplements Non Toxic Shopping Guide

Medicines & Supplements Non Toxic Shopping Guide

Traditional pharmaceuticals have their place, but they shouldn't be what you first reach for. Have you ever looked at the ingredient list of popular OTC medicines like Advil or Nyquil? They contain so many of the ingredients we avoid in our daily life, so why would we take them when we are sick? Our body is capable of healing with just a little support. This is our running list of more natural remedies when you're feeling ill or need to supplement your diet.

Tinctures and Homeopathic Meds

Cold & Flu

Here are some "better choice" over the counter meds you might consider in place of traditional Tylenol and Advil remedies. These have worked well for us.

  • Genexa Acetaminophen (this is the same Acetaminophen in Tylenol and traditional pain reliever products. What makes this a "better choice" is that it's dye-free and sweetened with organic ingredients and they've kept the price very affordable).
  • Zarbee's Honey Cough Syrup (Day & Night) (this contains Citric Acid and Natural Flavor, however, it is a much better choice than traditional cough syrups and has worked for us. It is also readily available in big box stores).

Immune Support

Toss out that Emergen-C package full of artificial garbage, and opt for these better choice supplements. You won’t get that same fizzy feeling (most of these are capsules), but it gets the job done. Note: vitamins from whole foods are usually a lower dosage, but don't fret, they tend to be more bioavailable than synthetic options. Also, don't be turned off by "synthetic". Synthetic can be safe, just make sure you're getting a good one!

    Gut Support

    • Triquetra Liquid Probiotic (safe for kids, but they should take a half dose; e-mail the company if you have specific questions. They are great about answering.)

    First Aid

    Ointments, Salves, Balms

    Tools

When you're feeling under the weather, every small comfort counts. While medications can be necessary, there are also many non-medicinal tools that can help ease symptoms, support recovery, and make you feel better. Include these in your wellness toolkit before your next cold!
